Roy Koopa is one of the seven Koopalings to appear as an antagonist in Paper Mario: Color Splash. He is encountered right after Mario and Huey enter Black Bowser's Castle and is overall the twelfth and penultimate boss of the game.

History[]

Mario falls through a trapped door into a cell where Roy reveals himself, along with several other Slurp Guys. They all trample Mario, stealing all his paint and any 1-UP cards.

Battle Tactics[]

Once the battle starts, Roy brings out a Bill Blaster and the Shy Guys come back with buckets of paint. The Shy Guys will pour the paint into the Bill Blaster, and every time Roy fires the paint onto Mario, he is victim to drastic change in emotion. Red Paint makes Mario angry and he gets faster. Orange Paint makes Mario shy, and he will not paint any cards. This forces the player to use only pre-painted cards. Yellow Paint excites Mario, and he cannot use Blue Paint or blue cards. Green Paint discourages Mario, and the battle slows down. Blue Paint makes Mario feel sad, and he will only use blue cards and paint. Purple paint makes Mario sick, and he will be poisoned every turn until the paint wears off. Once Roy has used each color once, he will mix every color together to create black paint. He will shoot the all around the room, and the screen will become covered in black paint, along with the entire room. Mario cannot see, and every attack will miss. In order to clean up the black paint, Mario must use the Washing Machine, which cleans the cell and destroys the Bill Blaster in the process. The rest of the fight is straightforward, with Roy throwing punches or jumping on Mario each turn until he is defeated. Once he is, he returns Mario's 1-UP cards (If he had any) and flees.

Trivia[]

  • Roy is the only Koopaling that does not go after a Big Paint Star, and here by the only one to be a Regular Boss instead of a Chapter Boss.
  • In Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam, at some point Wendy and Roy ponder over whether Koopalings have Paper counterparts. This is possibly foreshadowing the Koopalings debut in the Paper Mario series in Paper Mario: Color Splash, which came out the year after.
  • Roy is the only Koopaling to be shown using black paint
