Paint is a key item and concept used within Paper Mario: Color Splash. The game's theme widely surrounds the use of paint, its main use being to give life to blank characters, and as well as repaint dried up white spots using Mario's hammer (Repainting all white spots is required for 100% completion). Paint comes in all six natural colors, but the primary colors are the only ones measured in-game. If Mario runs out of red, yellow, or blue paint, he will be unable to paint specific things that require the missing color. During battle, paint is used to color cards. If a paint meter is depleted, the card can still be painted, but it's attack power will decrease. Black paint is another important object in the game, but instead can hurt Mario, and anyone else who touches it. The black paint notably posses Bowser, turning him into the games antagonist, Black Bowser.
