The Diploma is the reward for defeating The Master in his final state. It serves no purpose other than to change the dialogue of three characters - a Toad in Toad Town, a Dryite at the Dry Dry Outpost, and a Penguin in Shiver City. Having the Diploma will impress all of them, leading them to compliment Mario on his strength and skill.
