Jean-Pierre Colored Pencils the 12th, commonly referred to as Colored Pencils, is a boss of Paper Mario: The Origami King. It guards the red streamer and is the first member of the Legion of Stationery encountered. It is the first main Chapter boss of Paper Mario: The Origami King, the second boss of Chapter 1 and is overall the second boss of the game.
Summary[]
Colored Pencils is a member of the Legion of Stationery, tasked with guarding the end of the Red Streamer atop Overlook Tower. Several of the walls and floors in the tower have been vandalised with its pencil art and pencil missiles.
When Mario and Olivia take the elevator to the fourth floor, Colored Pencils sends several missiles to strike it, sending the elevator back to the bottom floor, putting it out of commission and forcing Mario and Olivia to make their way up the stairs. On the outside of the tower, it starts launching a barrage of missiles that first circle around the tower, forcing Mario to jump or hammer them, then having missiles attack from the outside, requiring Mario to bait one into striking a cracked wall barring his progress. While Mario lowers the ladder he has to climb to reach the top of the tower, he has to avoid a barrage of missiles raining from the sky.
When Mario and Olivia reach the rooftop and discover the end of the Red Streamer, Olivia pushes Mario away from 2 pencil missiles about to blow him up. After that, Colored Pencils reveals itself and a boss battle begins, After the boss battle, Colored Pencils is defeated and its crumpled and battered case explodes.
Attacks and Ways To Defend Against Them[]
Snap Shut:[]
- Snap Shut is a fixed attack that deals 13 damage. It has a short range and will miss if Mario attacked from the outer two rings that turn. Otherwise, guarding to reduce the damage is advised.
Primary Target:[]
- At the start of the fight and every turn it isn’t stunned, Colored Pencils will fire several missiles into the air. Targets will appear on random panels. This is rather easy to avoid, as the targets are usually in front of Colored Pencils and do not move with the rings. Also, if Mario is hit by one, he will take 3 damage, though this will not cancel his turn.
Pencil Rain:[]
- When Mario has finished moving, but before he is able to attack, the pencils from Primary Target will rain down on the targets.
- If Mario stops on a target, a colored pencil will fall right on Mario and damage him. So try and avoid attacking on on the missile lock-on spots.
Reload:[]
- Used to replenish all 12 colored missiles, preparing to attack. The reload move isn't dangerous, but it always happens after Colored Pencils attacks.
Rainbow Roll:[]
- This event occurs when the Colored Pencils are at half health, with the pencils revolving in a cylindrical shape. After Mario’s turn, Colored Pencils will launch a barrage of blasts that will damage Mario up to six times.
- Closing the Colored Pencils' lid won't do you any good this time, instead, using the 1000 Fold Arms directly on the pencils will disable its attack and crumple it, allowing for free damage and a possible knockout.
Worst Case:
- Only used if Colored Pencils isn’t finished off after its case is crumpled. It will only be able to smack Mario for 2 damage (1 damage if blocked.)
Strategy[]
As the first boss, Colored Pencils is relatively easy. Initially, all the player has to do is move behind Colored Pencils while avoiding the targets, then either use the Hammer Attack or flip the "ON" Switch to use the 1,000 Fold Arms to close down the lid, forcing Colored Pencils to deal damage to itself and stunning it. During the turns when Colored Pencils is stunned, the Player is free to choose any attack options without needing to worry about the targets, although the Player must be sure to be in the front as otherwise the lid will close to no effect.
After around half of Colored Pencils' HP is down, it will perform the Rainbow Roll attack continuously. The player must then flip the "ON" switch, then use the 1,000 Fold Arms in front of Colored Pencils to grab hold of its pencils and smash them into its case, crumpling it and allowing for massive damage. If Colored Pencils still has some HP left, it will then only be able to use a weak attack if Mario is too close. The fight is basically over at that point and the player is free to use any attack options to finish it off.
